Sarracenia minor, S. alata, S. leucophylla, S. flava, S. rubra
The Sarracenia are one of the most efficient of all carnivorous plants, consuming vast numbers of insects. It lures its prey by secreting nectar around the lip of the pitcher; the nectar paralyses the insect and it falls into the tube. Once the insect reaches the bottom it is dissolved and the plant absorbs the nutrient value.
Sarracenia leucophylla (White Top Pitcher Plant)
The White Top Pitcher is one of the most spectacular pitcher plants. The top of the leaf colors range from totally white, to white netted in green or white with red veins, or a combination of the three colors. Pitchers can reach up to 3 feet in height and over three inches in diameter. They produce large red nodding flowers.
Sarracenia minor (Hooded Pitcher Plant)
The Hooded Pitcher Plant is a very attractive and unusual pitcher plant; its lid forms a domed canopy over the mouth of the pitcher to create a hood. These pitchers are generally green with a coppery red color near the upper portions of the pitcher and have white translucent windows on the upper back part. The pitchers grow vertically and will usually reach an average height of 12-15 inches.
Sarracenia alata (Pale Pitcher Plant)
A robust and relatively easy to grow green pitcher plant that sometimes has deep red to purple color to the upper quarter of the pitcher with many red veins. Pitchers can reach up to 30 inches in height. They produce large pale yellow to almost white nodding flowers.
Sarracenia flava (Yellow Trumpet Plant)
A relatively easy to grow carnivorous plant that commonly has a big splash of deep red to purple color at the throat of the pitcher, many red veins at the upper quarter of the pitchers. This one has flared mouth and rather broad lip. Produces erect narrow pitchers that can reach 2 - 3 feet in height or more. They produce large yellow nodding flowers.
Sarracenia rubra ssp. rubra (The Sweet Trumpet Plant)
A subspecies, native to North and South Carolina this plant commonly has narrow pitchers that are heavily red veined and has a short pointy lid. These pitchers usually reach a height of 12-18 inches. This plant produces small red nodding flowers with a sweet fragrance.
Sarracenia are native to the wet savannahs in the southeast USA, from northeastern Florida to eastern Mississippi. Typical summer temperatures where they grow naturally are in the mid 90's F. Winter temperatures can be below freezing at times. Mature plants enjoy full sun outdoors. Seedlings make an excellent terrarium plant.
