Washingtonia robusta
Skyduster Palm, Mexican Fan Palm, Tornado Palm
The Skyduster Palm is similar to the California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) but grows much taller and has a much thinner trunk. This graceful solitary palm can grow to 100 feet or more.
This stately and attractive, fast-growing palm is cold hardy and drought tolerant. It is one of the most widely used landscape palms in cooler areas. This is also one of the most popular palms in California where you will see it lining the streets of exclusive neighborhoods, in parks, beaches, and home landscapes.
Washingtonia robusta is native to the desert regions of Sonora and Baja Mexico and is very easy to grow. It can be planted in full sun or light shade, and adapts easily to most types of soil or conditions. This palm grows to about 100 feet in height and can have a spread of about 10-15 feet. Its fan leaves can be 3 to 5 feet wide and the leave stems are armed along the margins with curved thorns. Once older leaves die they tend to hang on the tree and form a skirt, hence the name petticoat palm. The gray tapered trunk of this palm is very thin at the top and bulges at ground level
The elegant Mexican Fan Palm is cold hardy to 20 F and widely planted in USDA zones 9-11. Easy to germinate and grow from seeds.
